So Evgeny Morozov has been arguing against the “Internet -> Freedom!” connection for years. It must be gratifying for him to see his theories finally becoming conventional wisdom. (Though, of course, sad because of the events that proved him right)
The internet can be a tool of censorship and control as much as it can be used for liberation and revolt. Its very design - root signing authorities, DNS servers, backbone bandwidth providers, domain registrars - relies on points of centralization.
So that’s obvious and old news. Here’s the thing - we live in a system where your digital activities are easily monitored, but it’s quite hard to monitor anyone else, or even tell if someone is paying attention to you at all. Guys, we live in the Panopticon! The definition fits.
