So Hadag Nachash is pretty solidly a left-leaning, or straight-up left, band. They talk about income inequality, peace, the plight of pensioners, and all that. They also talk about smoking marijuana and visiting brothels.
So, clearly they’re more authentic than “old left” songsters that led with propaganda first, then tacked on music. Hadag Nachash is speaking from their own experiences and frustrations in a way that is genuine and connects with people.
Part of their experience, though, involves smoking up and visiting whores.
So, is being ok with prostitution a “left” position?
This reminds of video I saw from the G20 protests in Toronto. Some black bloc people were attacking a strip joint. Then others started chanting “sex work is work”, and got them to stop. So there seems to be disagreement.
Not sure where I stand on the philosophical/ideological battle here.
I am sure, however, that H.N.’s pro-prostitution position is more a tribal/cultural stance than a careful ideological positioning. This simultaneously moves leftism in Israel closer to their experience/culture/network (we’ll call it “youth”, though of course that’s hopelessly broad), and moves “youth” culture more towards the left. That is, if they are successful.
Interesting how life is full of trade-offs.
